Index

Same-store index of live postings, chain-linked daily, 16 Jul 2026 = 100. Latest 94.8, −1.3% over 7 days, +1.1% over 28 days. The lower panel shows the live stock the index is drawn from; stock levels include collection growth and should not be read as demand.

Figure 1.Same-store postings rose 1.1% over 28 days
Shaded span before 9 Oct 2026 is reconstructed from archived evidence.

Source: Metaintro Direct Hiring Demand Monitor, postings from employer career sites and applicant tracking systems; data through 9 Oct 2026. Note: Same-store index of live postings at employers tracked 14+ days, chain-linked daily; coverage events move the stock, not the index.

The index and core change differ (+1.1% against +8.4% unadjusted) because the index counts postings, so the largest employers dominate it, while core change averages each employer's growth with caps and trimming. Breadth of +33.7% shows that more employers grew than shrank.

Companies

Live-posting change by named employer. 1,013 public companies are mapped to tickers, carrying 894,977 live postings (16.4% of the universe); mapping is precision-first. Franchise brands include postings by their franchisees on the brand's career site. Rising and falling lists rank the 28-day change excluding coverage and keep only moves sustained in at least 3 of 4 weeks with no coverage event; rises also need most new postings seen within a week of posting. Screened out today: 2,374 employers with a coverage event, 344 unconfirmed rises, 118 unsustained falls.

Program notes

Coverage and method changes a reader needs to interpret the series, newest first.

Methodology

Version 2026-10-10.

Universe
Job postings collected directly from employer career sites and applicant tracking systems, plus official public employment exchanges, deduplicated by canonical posting URL. Job boards and aggregators are excluded.
Live posting
A posting observed open on its source and not yet confirmed gone. Evidence of life lasts 14 days after the posting was last seen, so a posting closes 14 days after its last sighting, or on confirmed removal if sooner. A posting whose employer we have not observed since its last sighting stays open until we can check; after 60 days unobserved it leaves the level as coverage.
Same-store change
Chain-linked daily ratio of live postings at employers tracked for at least 14 days, so newly added employers never read as hiring.
Coverage events
Changes caused by our collection rather than by employers are treated like corporate actions in an equity index: they move the level, not the index, flows or rankings. They are: postings first seen more than 14 days after their posting date although we observed the employer in between (a board, page or cap we had not been reading); an employer-day whose net change exceeds 25% of its postings (50% below 100 postings, minimum 10); a same-direction run of days whose 7-day total exceeds the same threshold (a catch-up spread over several fetches); and postings leaving because their employer went unobserved. Postings found late only because their board went unfetched remain openings.
Core change
Robust change used for all rankings. Each employer's change is a Davis-Haltiwanger growth rate weighted by average size; no employer exceeds 10% of a group's weight, and the most extreme 5% of weight in each tail is trimmed, as in a trimmed-mean price index. The 95% interval reflects how widely employers' growth rates are spread; it does not capture collection error.
Breadth
Weight share of employers whose postings grew more than 5% minus the share that shrank more than 5% over 28 days.
New postings and endings
Postings first observed (new) or that left employer boards (endings) at tracked employers, excluding coverage events. Our own catalogue clean-up (retired sources, stale-posting and quality removals) is excluded from history entirely and is never an ending.
Company signals
A company is listed as rising or falling only when its 28-day change excluding coverage moved the same way in at least 3 of the 4 weeks and no one-day coverage event touched it. A rise also needs at least half of its dated new postings seen within 7 days of posting and no more than a quarter discovered late. A multi-day run that meets that evidence is hiring, not a catch-up, so it can rank; the all-postings index still treats every run as coverage.
Occupations
2018 SOC codes assigned by our classifier. Closed postings labelled by an earlier classifier version are re-labelled by title, or allocated by the employer's current occupation mix. Unambiguous SOC 2010 codes are renamed to 2018; other codes outside the 2018 taxonomy (about 5% of postings) count only in their major group.
Pay
US postings with disclosed pay in USD, annualized midpoint of the posted range, 15k to 1M. Compared with BLS OEWS May 2025 medians for the same SOC, nationally and in the same metro. Disclosure is concentrated in pay-transparency states.
Geography
Each posting counts once, split equally across its listed locations. Metros are 2023 CBSAs matched by place name.
Durations
Days from the employer's posting date to the ending, for postings that ended in the last 28 days.
Coverage grade
A: 95% of active boards with a complete fetch within 48 hours and pipeline and search index within 5%. B: 85% and 8%. Otherwise C. A board settled through a duplicate sibling counts as fetched. On grade C days 7-day readings are shown but flagged as unreliable, and the 28-day reading leads.
Seasonal adjustment
All-postings changes are seasonally adjusted with Indeed Hiring Lab's daily factor for US job postings (its unadjusted index over its adjusted index, averaged by calendar day over 2023 to 2025). Occupations add the seasonality of their industry mix relative to the total, from BLS JOLTS job openings by industry weighted by BLS OEWS employment of the occupation in each industry; JOLTS is used only relative to its own total because its single reference day gives its unadjusted level a calendar pattern postings do not share. Detailed occupations use their major group's factor. States, metros, countries and companies are not adjusted.
Revisions
Each edition is computed from everything known at publication and archived unchanged. Later editions revise recent days as late sightings and confirmed removals arrive; the revisions table compares each edition's first print with today's estimate of the same window. Series before the first live edition are reconstructed from archived evidence.
Track record
Each edition estimates the next BLS JOLTS job openings print by carrying the latest published level forward with our seasonally adjusted same-store change over the target month, and appends the estimate to a forecast log published with every edition. When BLS publishes, the last estimate published before the release is scored against the first print. No interval is shown until six months are scored, so it can be calibrated on our own errors.
Representativeness
Postings are a sample of demand, not a census. Each edition compares our live US postings with BLS JOLTS job openings and our occupation mix with BLS OEWS employment, so over- and under-represented groups are visible. Rankings use changes within each group, which are less sensitive to the mix than levels.
Limits
Postings measure advertised demand, not hires. Collection coverage is still expanding, which biases level series upward; use core changes, breadth and relative moves. Employer-to-ticker mapping is precision-first and covers about a fifth of postings.
Suppressed codes
19-2011 (Astronomers: the classifier assigns biostatistics and research roles to this code). Also left out of rankings: codes whose live postings exceed 25% of the occupation's US employment in BLS OEWS, which only a mislabel produces: 39-2011 Animal Trainers (18,345 US postings vs 18,770 employed), 33-3031 Fish and Game Wardens (1,683 US postings vs 5,770 employed), 19-2011 Astronomers (1,325 US postings vs 2,120 employed), 19-1011 Animal Scientists (886 US postings vs 3,100 employed).
