Breathe easy, [Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA)](https://www.wasa.gov.tt/) and [Housing Development Corporation (HDC)](https://www.hdc.mv/) employees. The government is putting the kibosh on rumors of impending pink slips. Prime Minister Stuart Young confirmed no axe is swinging toward the jobs of 5,000 WASA workers, soothing fears ignited by [Public Services Association (PSA)](https://psatrinbagott.org/) president Felicia Thomas.

## Political Theatre: Rumors and Reality

If you’ve ever played a game of telephone, you know how a message can transform into something unrecognizable by the end. Thomas left some WASA employees uneasy when she claimed the government had plans to send half of them packing. "Vote them out," shouted PSA workers rallying for the opposition party at a recent [United National Congress (UNC)](https://unctt.org/) meeting. The platform was ablaze with claims of governmental "oppression."

The WASA workforce, she argued, is on a proverbial chopping block as part of a Cabinet subcommittee strategy. But Prime Minister Young assures that the idea of WASA privatization or layoffs was rejected faster than a toddler turning down broccoli at dinnertime. Instead, revitalization through management restructuring is the new modus operandi. With a new CEO at the helm, WASA aims to meet Trinidad and Tobago's water needs more efficiently than ever. Current water supply levels are at an all-time high, thanks to a teamwork invigorated WASA force.

## HDC Denials and Disputes

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) found itself caught in the eye of the rumor storm, with murmurs that job cuts were imminent. Not so, says HDC in their reassuring press release. According to them, talk of retrenchment following any new party installment is, quite simply, bunkum.

For the record, HDC is tuning its focus on wage and salary negotiations—from as far back as 2012 up to 2019—which they’ve passed down to the Chief Personnel Officer for evaluation. So, if you're in line for a loan or scouting for apartments, the situation over at HDC is business as usual, minus the awkward talks of job cuts around the office break room.

Felicia Thomas’s assertion that the PNM government's restructuring practices are synonymous with job cuts found no base—though the PSA continues calling to “vote them out” at every opportunity. According to their narrative, the PNM's modification of the Ministry of Housing to the HDC didn't birth any visible progress, similar to their revamp of regional health authorities.

In the meantime, the government's present stance is one of assurance, with their mantra echoing stability, continued employment, and efficient agency functioning— notwithstanding all the political hullabaloo.

Amidst all the government rhetoric and opposition party posturing, it seems that WASA and HDC jobs have a bit more security than previously assumed.

For workers and stakeholders alike, it might be time to shift focus from worry towards productivity while disregarding the political noise. Time to punch those time clocks without trepidation—because, as it stands, your job appears safer than your grandma’s cookie jar.
