VTA Calls on Governor Newsom to Help Resolve South Bay Transit Strike

When Commutes Turn into a Waiting Game

If you’re in the South Bay area and find yourself hitching a ride to work or contemplating a scenic bike tour instead of your much-missed bus or light rail, you’re not alone. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has asked California Governor Gavin Newsom to roll up his sleeves and step into a transit strike causing headaches for thousands of commuters.

With VTA buses and light rail trains on an extended siesta since March 10 due to a worker walkout, the agency also filed for a Superior Court injunction, hoping to prevent further chaos for the community. Apparently, both wheels and contracts have ground to a halt.

The Clash Over Contracts

So, what’s the fuss all about? It boils down to a labor stalemate between VTA and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265. Representing more than 1,500 transit workers, the Union is thrumming to a different tune, especially on pay. They're in search of a bump-in-the-paycheck groove, proposing a 6% salary increase annually over the next three years. On the other side, VTA’s offer reads more like a gentle ballad with suggested wage growth at 4%, 3%, and 2% across the same timeline.

Both parties began trying to hash things out back in August 2024, aiming to pave a fresh track beyond the contract which slipped into purgatory when it expired on March 9. Meanwhile, there's been a call for a third-party arbitrator to step in for disputes, moving away from courtroom drama. Something tells us this plot won’t air on Netflix anytime soon.

Can Governor Newsom Shift Gears?

VTA's appeal to Governor Newsom is simple: convene a Board of Investigation under state law to personally peel away the layers of this tangled mess. If established, the board could pause the strike. Talk about a quick-stop suspension—just pull the emergency brake while they figure it out!

In the attempts to smooth things over, VTA and the Union have met twice since the strike’s grand premiere, with a little nudge from a State Conciliation Service mediator earlier this year. The ball is now in Governor Newsom’s court, and the anticipation is almost as thick as Bay Area fog.

As commuters—be it bus riders, light rail enthusiasts, or perhaps those excusing the occasional Uber—we await how this will unfold. In the meantime, consider practicing deep breathing for your alternative morning routine.
