Their gaming division has recently become the talk of Silicon Valley, with reports of significant layoffs at [Night School Studio](https://nightschoolstudio.com/), a gem in [Netflix's](https://www.netflix.com/) gaming crown. Amidst a bustling tech landscape, Netflix expanded its empire beyond series and films, acquiring the [Oxenfree](https://nightschoolstudio.com/oxenfree/) developer back in 2021. But like any binge-session in the midst of an internet outage, not everything goes as planned. The move signifies yet another tremor in the rocky tech terrain beset by budget cuts and strategic pivots. ### Game Over for Some So, what's unfolding backstage at Night School Studio? Founded in 2014, this studio captured gamers' hearts with narrative-driven hits. Yet, despite rave reviews and player loyalty, the team finds itself bracing for changes, as Netflix wields the cost-cutting scalpel. In an almost poetic spin of fate, Night School had unveiled the sequel to its beloved game, Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, earlier this year. But like a lush meadow unceremoniously turned into condos, segments of the studio’s talent pool are being redirected. Netflix isn't simply playing solo in this gaming expansion quest. The streaming mogul joined an industry sprinting towards cloud-based games and mobile-first experiences. However, Netflix finds itself contending with market titans blessed with bigger war chests, players like [Microsoft](https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/about) and [Sony](https://www.sony.com/), who never skip a console generation. --- Ad## ✨ A Word From Our Sponsors 👇 📈 Job hunting or exploring new ideas? Tech layoffs have been creeping up this year, the whispers of which are heard through LinkedIn updates and industry Slack channels. The industry's once-fast-and-loose employment streak has hit a nerve-wracking pause. And yet, gaming remains an area earmarked by many analysts for long-term growth, especially as more people require an escape from, well, the news. Night School Studio, with its storytelling chops, resurfaces questions about the viability of niche play in a mainstream world. Perhaps it's not ‘game over’ but a ‘try again’ moment for Netflix in the gaming universe. What's next for Netflix's gaming gambit is anybody's guess. However, given its reputation for reinvention, we might just have a riveting plot twist waiting in the wind. In the meantime, here's hoping Night School’s talent continues weaving tales that keep us engaged, one pixelated choice at a time. Remember folks, next time you hear "Are you still watching?" imagine if it’s your favorite game asking the same question.
