Yep, it's the Trump administration, and they're not pulling punches with the recent workforce cuts at [Voice of America (VOA)](https://www.voanews.com/). For the uninitiated, VOA is a US government-funded international broadcaster that's been beaming news in 49 languages since World War II. Designed to provide impartial news where it’s hard to come by, VOA plays a crucial role in amplifying American values worldwide. On March 16, without much fanfare, the Trump administration initiated layoffs. Contractors, who form a big chunk of VOA’s personnel, were emailed and informed they would be jobless come month-end. The catch? Many of these folks aren't US citizens and rely on these gigs for their visas. Talk about a plot twist! The full-time staff, still protected by the sanctity of labor laws, found themselves on administrative leave, a corporate no-man’s-land where they’re essentially told not to work. ## **When The Music Stops, Literally** Hit pause on your [Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/) playlist because some VOA services have literally resorted to playing music as new programming dwindles. With their non-English language services left in limbo, VOA's historical mission to spread the good word of democracy feels more like a whispered promise these days. Liam Scott, a VOA journalist, sounded the alarm via social media, saying these moves are part of a broader agenda against media freedom. It's akin to being ghosted by the government after years of swiping right on democracy. --- Ad## ✨ A Word From Our Sponsors 👇 📩 Job hunting? They’ve criticized the move as a gnawing setback for media freedom that chips away at America’s stature as a stalwart for free speech. Simon Spanswick, AIB’s CEO, points out the bitter irony of cutting international media funding just when the world needs credible information the most. The numbers back this up: while precise contractor figures remain elusive, VOA is a workforce powerhouse, employing hundreds of contractors globally. These layoffs aren't just company shake-up gossip—they ripple beyond borders, affecting VOA's capability to reach people in nations lacking free press. So, what’s next? The axes are falling, and speculation is rife that America’s global influence—and credibility—is wobbling. Watch this space, folks; peace and freedom might just become the ultimate casualties of this new power play.
