Navigating India's rising job market for women offers a valuable lesson in disability inclusion and skills-based hiring.

Empowering Women and Enhancing Inclusion: The Future of India's Job Market

Women Climbing the Career Ladder: A New High

For all the young women in India, the latest news from the job front might just make you want to break into a little celebratory dance. Employment opportunities for women are set to rise by a robust 48% in 2025, according to a report by foundit. It's freshers and early-career professionals who are making hearty strides in sectors like IT, manufacturing, BFSI, and healthcare—move over, India Inc., the future is female!

This is not just a win for gender diversity; it's a handbook on what could be achieved for another potential game-changer: disability inclusion. As a woman with disabilities, I can't help but envision a similar trajectory for PwDs (Persons with Disabilities) gaining ground in workplaces.

The Untapped Potential of the PwD Workforce

Yet, despite the movement for gender diversity making leaps and bounds, employment opportunities for PwDs still have a mountain to climb. According to 2018 stats from the National Statistical Office, a dreary 36% of PwDs in India are employed—pointing to a massive pool of untapped talent. Additionally, a recent analysis of reports by 1,062 companies showed that only 0.6% of permanent employees were PwDs. Ouch.

So why do we need skills-based hiring? Simply because a focus on skills rather than just experience could open gates for PwDs, offering them the freedom to show what they can do rather than pigeonhole them based on what they have done. Companies that embrace skill-centric assessments over traditional backgrounds are already reaping the rewards in innovation and employee morale.

This gender shift, prioritizing fresh talent and skills over a dated resume, is a sweet opportunity for employers to get creative with inclusive workplace policies. If the trend of hiring newbies with zero to three years of experience continues, imagine how tailored mentorship and early-career programs could also welcome PwDs into the professional fold.

Renewing Hiring Practices for Real Diversity

For industries where exclusion is rampant, adopting a skills-first mentality is key. No longer should past employment tenure serve as the only ticket to a new job. When done right, skills-based hiring has the power to

  • Expand the talent pool by valuing skill over experience.
  • Reduce bias by focusing on capabilities.
  • Encourage innovation by fostering a diverse workforce.
  • Boost accessibility by leveling the playing field for people with non-traditional backgrounds, like PwDs.

It's time for governments, too, to catch up. The Indian administration, learning from global peers, could pioneer internships, apprenticeships, and mentorship programs aimed squarely at PwDs. After all, the UK’s Disability Confident scheme and Australia’s JobAccess initiative are already doing wonders.

Looking forward, we can’t rely on wisdom-tooth strategies (older methods) that are long past their expiry date. It’s well timed for a system reboot, embracing skills and merit in hiring, echoing the recent elevation in women's employment as a benchmark.

Imagine a world where every company leans into this ethos, creating groundswell change in retaining talented professionals across the board, regardless of gender or disability. What we're witnessing now in India's blooming job market only scratches the surface of what a more inclusive hiring philosophy can achieve.
