# The Company That Accidentally Invented Cubicle Culture

The cubicle wasn’t designed to trap workers—it was created to free them. Here’s how Herman Miller’s vision turned into the box we all know today.

## The Rise of the “Action Office”

In the late 1960s, Herman Miller—a design-forward furniture company—was searching for a solution to chaotic open-office plans. Their designer, Robert Propst, introduced the **Action Office II**, a set of modular walls, surfaces, and shelves that could be rearranged as needed.

Propst’s goal wasn’t isolation. It was **empowerment**. He wanted workers to have more autonomy, focus, and comfort than open plans allowed. The cubicle was born out of an urge to give people **room to think**—not box them in.

## From Vision to Volume

But what started as freedom quickly morphed into **efficiency-driven sameness**. Companies loved that cubicles could be mass-produced, scaled, and crammed into floorplans for max headcount. Instead of “action offices,” they became **cost-saving partitions**.

By the 1980s, cubicles were everywhere. The original intent was lost. Instead of boosting creativity and focus, the cube became a symbol of corporate conformity, beige walls, and motivational posters about “synergy.”

## The Cultural Backlash

As cubicle farms spread, so did backlash. Dilbert comics mocked them. Office Space immortalized the monotony. The term “cubicle warrior” entered the workplace lexicon—not as praise, but resignation.

Ironically, even Herman Miller eventually distanced itself from the cubicle's reputation. The very company that created the system now leads the charge for **open-plan evolution**, hybrid furniture, and modular pods.

## The Bottom Line

The cubicle wasn’t supposed to be a cage—it was supposed to be a canvas. But when design meets profit margins, intent doesn’t always survive. What began as a vision for **freedom at work** became shorthand for **corporate entrapment**.

Still, the cubicle taught us something: how we shape space shapes how we work. Whether you’re in a pod, a cube, or on your couch, workplace design is never neutral—it always tells a story.
