Picture this: [University of Miami's](https://welcome.miami.edu/) very own Jackson Kuster, fresh off a successful interview with the [United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission](https://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc.html), had his heart set on starting his federal internship. Before you could say "government efficiency," the gig was yanked, courtesy of President Donald Trump’s executive decision to stall hires for 90 days. Leading this downsizing parade is none other than tech mogul Elon Musk, taking the helm at the [Department of Government Efficiency.](https://doge.gov/) Their plan? Slashing jobs and halting federal grants, all under the banner of trimming the proverbial "government fat". It's like Marie Kondo of federal employment: if it doesn’t spark joy, out it goes. According to Kuster, this turn of events was a real buzzkill. Having stared down a dry job market after graduation, he now has nothing but time to mope about what could've been a "really cool internship" that’s as hard to come by as a unicorn in budgeting season. ## Grant-less Growth Spurts The repercussions don't stop at job stalls—graduate programs are bracing for impact too. Incoming doctoral candidates face uncertainty as funding freezes could potentially change the landscape of higher education as we know it. The [National Institutes of Health's](https://www.nih.gov/) memo threatens to slash indirect costs, leaving schools like the [University of Pittsburgh](https://www.pitt.edu/) and [Vanderbilt University](https://www.vanderbilt.edu/) holding their breath. UM stands to lose a chunk of its $192 million NIH funding, a heftier loss than those extra bag fees at the airport. Victor Jaimes, a mathematics sophomore with grand plans for a Ph.D., is now pondering a future without grad school funding. He’s left wondering if he’ll have to trade Miami sunshine for international academia if the budget woes aren’t resolved. --- Ad## ✨ A Word From Our Sponsors 👇 🌍 Stay informed on the issues that matter—climate, jobs, and the future of work. Students like health science major Addie Murphy, who saw her internship at the [Miami Veterans Association](https://miamivets.org/) go up in electoral smoke, are now turning to volunteer gigs to keep their toes in the career pool. The private sector, though not devoid of opportunity, isn’t exactly a walk in the park. It's more like a competitive obstacle course filled with rogue jump-start barriers and fierce competition. A summer lab assistant who sought anonymity in fear of future job security echoes the sentiment: “Now I have to pivot and find non-research work because I lost that opportunity.” So here's a toast to resilience—and perhaps a few extra cups of coffee—as students navigate the tumultuous waters of job scarcity during this federal freeze. Just remember, the silver lining might be in the least expected places, even if that means sipping espresso in a bustling cafe while job hunting.
