The [California university](https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/) is in financial hot water, letting go of 13 employees as part of a larger plan to cut $14 million from its budget. Why, you ask? The culprit is declining enrollment — a trend that's had administrators twisted in knots and students and faculty hitting the protest trail like it’s the ‘60s again. Imagine being told on a hot June day that you could lose your job, only to find out later that others will take the fall instead. Of the 16 employees initially notified, 13 will have to wave goodbye. An additional 79 full-time job equivalents were eliminated through open positions and retirements. All this drama for a university projecting a $14 million deficit. Haven’t we all been broke college students? Sadly, CSU Channel Islands is living it for real. ## The Big, Bad Budget Blunder CSU Channel Islands has been stuck in the red zone for three years running. With an annual revenue falling short at less than $140 million, they wrapped up a deficit of $5.7 million for the 2024-25 school year. Did we mention they also drained their reserves from $40 million to about $22 million in just three years? Ouch! The plan to balance books initially called for slashing $17 million and potentially cutting 116 jobs. The forecast brightened ever so slightly with expected lesser state funding cuts, trimming down the required slash to $14 million. Even with the recent layoffs, they’re only covering $10.4 million of the shortfall this year. Their 2024 “fun in the sun” involved cutting costs by $11.3 million, ditching some 7.6% of their courses. Offering 80-90% of a year's salary, you’d think it’d be tempting, but with conditions tied to their fertile academic landscape, the takers were closer to retirement age anyway. Enrollment, it seems, is CSU Channel Islands' Achilles' heel. Plummeting over 35% since 2019 from 6,400 full-time students to about 4,150 now, the campus is on a slippery slope and it knows it. Cutting back on budget extras can only go so far, meaning the true hero here isn't a professor, but enrollment. As Greg Wood, a professor and union president said, "Everything hinges on enrollment for us." And there’s the kicker. How well CSU Channel Islands can bounce back rides on attracting new students and keeping them around, which for now sounds like the modern-day higher-ed version of cracking the Da Vinci code.
