April's numbers tell a tale of slow hiring but, take heart, layoffs are notably decreasing. According to [BioSpace](https://www.biospace.com/), job postings went up all of 1% from March to April, but don’t pop any champagne just yet — that’s still 8% down year-over-year. For context, the [U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/) dropped their report card too, citing a 4% decrease in open positions from February to March, and an eye-watering 11% nosedive since last year. It seems the hiring crystal ball is foggy, at least for now. Recruitment guru Greg Clouse of BioSpace, the eternal optimist, is waiting for the storm to pass in hopes that the dam will burst with opportunities. "We've all been waiting a long time," says Clouse. "I'm hopeful for an explosion, not a drizzle." We're crossing fingers too, Greg. ## **Job Market Curveball: Fewer Layoffs** Despite the slow hiring pace, there's a sunny side: fewer pink slips. Layoffs in April fell a solid 22% compared to last year, according to [BioSpace data](https://www.biospace.com/biospace-layoff-tracker). Month over month, layoffs dipped 18%. While it's not quite Palm Beach, it's certainly not a winter of discontent either. Yet biotech and pharma professionals aren't exactly kicking back in job paradise. Boston, a biopharma hub, recently showed a higher unemployment rate of 4.5% compared to the national average of 4.2%. And in a move not part of the layoffs decline, [Spark Therapeutics](https://sparktx.com/) trimmed 298 employees as part of a planned reorganization from earlier this year. On the bright side, fewer layoffs mean less competition — at least theoretically. Still, until companies go on a hiring spree, candidates will continue to hustle in a competitive market.
