## How a secretary's mistake turned into a $47.5 million correction

In the error-phobic typing pools of the 1950s, a single typo could mean starting an entire page over again. That is, until one resourceful secretary decided enough was enough.

Bette Nesmith Graham, a divorced single mother working as an executive secretary in Dallas, wasn't particularly skilled at typing. What she lacked in accuracy, however, she made up for in ingenuity.

Watching bank painters add a layer over their mistakes rather than starting fresh, Graham had her lightbulb moment: "If they can paint over their errors, why can't I?" By 1956, Graham was mixing tempera paint and water in her kitchen blender, creating a concoction she called "Mistake Out." Using a small watercolor brush, she would discreetly dab the white liquid over typos at work, waiting for it to dry before typing the correction.

## From kitchen experiment to corporate contraband

Graham's homemade solution worked so well she began sharing it with coworkers. Her secret weapon remained under the radar until her boss caught her "correcting" a mistake. Rather than receiving praise for her innovation, Graham was fired for using an unauthorized substance on company documents.

## Talk about failing forward.

Undeterred by her termination, Graham doubled down. She refined her formula, rebranded her product as "Liquid Paper," patented it in 1958, and began selling it from her home. By 1968, her basement operation had blossomed into a full-fledged company producing 100,000 bottles per month.

## The $47.5 million typo fix

In a stunning workplace win, Graham sold her company to the Gillette Corporation in 1979 for $47.5 million (roughly $190 million in today's dollars), plus royalties. Not bad for a product conceived at a kitchen table. Before her death in 1980, Graham established two foundations supporting women in business and the arts. Her legacy lives on not just in the correction fluid that transformed office work, but in her entrepreneurial spirit. The maternal connection you didn't see coming Here's the kicker: If Bette Nesmith Graham's name sounds vaguely familiar, there's a reason. Her son is Michael Nesmith, former member of the popular 1960s band The Monkees.

Bottom line: Next time you're scrambling to cover a workplace mistake, remember Bette Graham. Sometimes your biggest professional "error" might just be your million-dollar opportunity.
