Despite sending reassuring letters to incoming cadets, the Academy is still sorting out plans for staff layoffs amidst an exodus of 140 resignations. This is just the prelude to further anticipated personnel reductions. Talk about leaving us hanging, right? The school might see an overhaul of its academic offerings, potentially axing certain majors and minors, and reducing the 125 credit-hour requirement to a lean 120. As a comparison, the [University of Colorado Boulder](https://www.colorado.edu/home) has a slightly meatier requirement of 128 credit hours. The juggling act continues as the Air Force Academy attempts to balance these cuts while assuring that its “world-class” education remains intact. It feels a bit like maintaining a graceful swan dive while the pool is conspicuously half-empty. ## Swiss Cheese Syndrome Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, the Superintendent, has a rather vivid metaphor for this situation, courtesy of Air Force Chief David Allvin: institutions might end up resembling Swiss cheese. And no, it's not because they plan on serving fondue at the canteen. About 5,000 civilian positions are expected to be trimmed as part of the [National Defense Authorization Act's](https://www.armed-services.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/fy25_ndaa_executive_summary.pdf) marching orders for 2025, with the Academy contemplating the fate of 240 civilian roles specifically. Ironically, civilians are basically the smart shoppers of the academic workforce. According to a 2013 [Rand report](https://www.rand.org/pubs/monographs/MG1237.html), civilians are cheaper, boast more experience, and come with a PhD-sized amount of academic connections—a double whammy for the Air Force's budget-conscious regimen. Bauernfeind remains a stern optimist, urging prospective students to leap into what promises to be a dynamic, accredited environment, even if they might have a delayed start with classes due to a pushed course registration deadline.
