# When Air Conditioning Was Considered Too Fancy for Office Workers

Air conditioning wasn’t always a standard. In the early 1900s, it was reserved for executives—and workers were told to sweat it out. Here's how A/C went from luxury to necessity.

### The Cool Divide

In today’s offices, we complain when the A/C is *too cold*. But when air conditioning first entered the workplace in the early 1900s, it wasn’t a complaint—it was a **controversy**.

Early systems were expensive, bulky, and installed only in executive suites or boardrooms. Rank-and-file employees? They were told to sweat it out. Air conditioning was considered a **luxury**, not a necessity—and many employers believed “ordinary” workers didn’t need that level of comfort to do their jobs.

### Managers Chill, Workers Sweat

The unspoken message was clear: cool air was a **status symbol**. It wasn’t just about comfort—it was about hierarchy. Executives needed “clear minds.” Everyone else? They could open a window. Or bring a fan.

In some cases, workers were **explicitly banned** from using the cooled areas. One famous example: in 1920s Chicago, bank tellers weren’t allowed to cross into air-conditioned areas unless they had meetings with management.

### A Shift in the Air

As A/C tech improved and became more affordable, companies began to see the benefit—not just in comfort, but in **productivity**. Cooler employees made fewer mistakes. Absenteeism dropped. Focus improved.

By the 1950s and '60s, air conditioning became a **standard feature** in office buildings—though factories and retail workers would wait even longer. Eventually, the conversation flipped. Today, lack of A/C in an office is considered borderline inhumane.

### The Bottom Line

Air conditioning might seem like a basic utility today, but it was once a corporate privilege—reserved for the few, rationed to the rest. Its rollout revealed how comfort and control have always been tied together at work.

So the next time you’re reaching for a sweater in a freezing office, just remember: you're sitting in what was once considered **executive-level luxury**. And like most workplace “perks,” it took a long time—and a lot of resistance—to become normal.
